Venice Sunset Watercolour by Savva

One of my favorite parts of the world. This is Venice even though the original shot taken by a friend was taken late in the morning, I thought that a sunset would be a more suitable setting for such a magnificent city. I hope you like it :) S

The original photo was taken by Shahjahan Ahmed a wonderful friend and fellow watercolour artist. Thank you Shahjahan for posting your image and look forward to catching up with you again soon.

Famagusta street – Watercolour by Savva

Just around the corner from Famagusta Cathedral there’s this wonderful little street. There’s a coffee shop at the end of the street and the man on the bike is the coffee shop owner delivering coffee using the traditional tray and his old Hercules bike. It’s a scene that you could see everywhere in the past in Cyprus, so to witness it again in this day and age… it’s magic. Hope you like the painting :)

Famagusta Cathedral Watercolour by Savva

Very early this morning I set off to Famagusta to visit this wonderful medieval Cathedral. It was built in 1328 and it still retains all its grandeur and beauty to this day. It originally was Saint Nicholas’s Cathedral but later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman empire. I was very lucky as the whole building and area was covered by a wonderful mist and as the mist lifted it just revealed it piece by piece. I don’t get to witness this kind of beauty often but when I do, its just the most amazing thing ever. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today and hope to hear from you :)

EARLY-MORNING-LARNACA

Saint Lazaros Larnaca

Saint Lazarus Church Larnaca

Tradition says that the place of Lazarus’ tomb was lost during the period of Arab rule beginning in 649. In 890, a tomb was found in Larnaca bearing the inscription “Lazarus, four days dead, friend of Christ”.Emperor Leo VI of Byzantium had Lazarus’ remains transferred to Constantinople in 898. The transfer was apostrophized by Arethas, Bishop of Caesarea, and is commemorated by the Orthodox Church each year on October 17. The transferred relics were later looted by the Fourth Crusade in the early 13th century and were brought to Marseille but subsequently lost.

In recompense to Larnaca for the translation, Emperor Leo had the Church of St. Lazarus erected over Lazarus’ tomb in the late 9th to early 10th centuries.
